The University of Sydney conducted research into problem gambling, and the results of the study have shown that in Australia online sports gambling has overtaken poker as the main source of gambling addiction. Internet-based sports gambling has made it all too easy for gamblers to fall into a pattern of problem gambling.

Since it has outpaced other forms of online gambling, however, this has led some to conclude that it is not the Internet that is contributing to the rise in gambling addiction, but rather the sports betting in particular. This is good news for those who are fighting for the elimination of online gambling prohibition in the US, as it is clear from the study that online poker is not the threat that many US lawmakers have made it out to be. As sports betting turns out to be a bigger risk for addiction, especially among young men, US lawmakers seem to be on the right track in trying to pass a bill that legalizes online poker but not sports betting.
